Homemade Face Scrub for Acne

Having acne isno joke. It’s frustrating, embarrassing, and even sometimes painful. You want it to go away: I get it!

If you’re dealing with acne on your face, back, or chest, and you want to combat it naturally, an acne face scrub with essential oils can help. Not only does it help to lessen acne, it also helps to lighten dark spots, exfoliate dead skin, and level out the skin’s pH. (Fun fact: the skin needs to be at a certain pH in order to maintain an effective barrier against bacteria, allergens, and pollution.) This homemade acne face scrub is made with some of the best facial ingredients for fighting acne, but it can work anywhere you need it on your skin!

The best part of this natural face scrub for acne is that you don’t have to destroy your skin in order to combat your acne. Unlike a lot of drug store acne treatments, it’s filled with natural, good-for-you ingredients (instead of harsh chemicals that leave your skin dry, red, and irritated). Here’s how each ingredient works:

  • Baking Soda provides a base for this natural scrub that helps draw pore-clogging oil out of the skin. It exfoliates and has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.
  • Honey is soothing to your skin and adds moisture. It also combats redness and swelling from acne.
  • Using Aloe Vera Gel encourages the healing of the skin and reduces redness caused by acne. (It’s not just for sunburns!)
  • Vitamin E Oil heals acne scars that are left behind by the acne and improves skin’s elasticity.
  • Lavender Essential Oil contributes antimicrobials and antioxidants as well as an aromatherapy element that helps reduce stress. (As you may know, stress worsens acne).
  • Fine Sea Salt not only adds some additional exfoliation to the baking soda, but this ancient ingredient also replenishes your skin’s minerals, dissolves oil, and helps kill bacteria in the skin.
  • The antibacterial, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties of Tea Tree Essential Oil make it a strong treatment against acne.

Together, these ingredients make up a DIY face scrub for acne that’s powerful, yet gentler than other products.

Let’s get started!

1. Combine all your ingredients in a mixing bowl.

2. Stir until all ingredients are evenly mixed together.

3. Store your natural homemade acne face scrub in a small airtight jar (like this 4 oz. Mason jar or something similar). It’s very important that it be airtight: you don’t want bacteria getting into your anti-acne face scrub!

To use: With clean hands, scoop out a generous amount of the scrub. Apply it to damp skin in a circular motion for 1-2 minutes. Be gentle when applying! You don’t need to scrub vigorously for this scrub to work. Also, you don’t want to over-scrub your skin. Doing that can irritate it–the opposite of what you want! Let the scrub sit for an additional 1-2 minutes before rinsing it away and patting skin dry. (Again, you don’t want to irritate skin, which is why you should pat it dry instead of rubbing it with a towel.) Apply a light, oil-free moisturizer afterwards. (FYI: don’t be afraid of adding moisture to your skin. Acne-prone skin needs moisture just as much as–or maybe even more than–blemish-free skin. That’s because having too-dry skin can lead to micro-cracks, giving bacteria a place to enter and cause acne.)

I hope this scrub helps you achieve clear, glowing, healthy skin! If you have any other natural acne-fighting tips, please leave them in the comments below. For body, I recommend the Homemade Sugar Scrub Bars with Coconut Oil. (This one isn’t recommended for the face, as coconut oil can be comedogenic for some people.)
